EPR Registration for Battery Waste
Extended Producer Responsibility
Overview of Legal Metrology
The production and usage of batteries have surged due to the global shift toward clean energy and sustainable storage solutions. Batteries play a pivotal role in supporting the transition from fossil fuels to emission-free electrification.
This increased demand has led to a rise in battery imports and production, yet there is no robust framework for the environmentally sound disposal of battery waste. To address this challenge, the Government introduced the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, replacing the earlier Battery (Management & Handling) Rules, 2001. These updated guidelines focus on the responsible disposal of used batteries to minimize environmental harm.
Applicability of EPR Battery Certificate
Registration for Producers and Importers
Producers, as defined by the rules, include entities engaged in manufacturing, selling, or importing batteries, whether as standalone products or within devices. Under EPR, producers are responsible for
Collecting, recovering, and reconditioning used batteries.
Incorporating recovered materials into the production of new batteries.
All producers must register with the CPCB through the centralized online portal as per Rule 4 of the Battery Waste Management (BWM) Rules, 2022.
Benefits of EPR Authorization for Battery Waste
1. Promotes Sustainable Resource Use:
EPR authorization enables businesses to identify inefficiencies in the waste management process, optimize operations, and reduce costs.
2.Enhanced Waste Management Methods
A clear framework for waste collection, recycling, and disposal improves overall waste management practices.
3. Improved Collaboration
By fostering cooperation between stakeholders, EPR reduces initial implementation costs and simplifies waste management processes.
4. Enhanced Brand Reputation
EPR certification demonstrates a company’s commitment to sustainability, improving its reputation and appeal to environmentally conscious customers.
5. Cost-Effective Waste Management
EPR helps businesses balance cost savings and efficiency in waste management, enabling a focus on sustainable operations.
